MoDOT’s ‘Road to Tomorrow’ Convoy Heads to KC
By: Brian Kelly – CBS St. Louis, KMOX Sports Radio
June 7, 2016
If you were driving on Interstate 70 between St. Louis and Kansas City on Tuesday, you may have seen a convoy of two Teslas and a compressed natural gas-powered Chevy Silverado.
It was the Missouri Department of Transportation’s “Road to Tomorrow” team heading to Wednesday’s Missouri Transportation Commission meeting, where it will update commissioners on the progress it’s made in the year since it was formed.
Team leader Tom Blair says they’ve looked at hundreds of ideas to bring technology and innovation to the state’s highways, including some that would create sustainable long-term revenue streams.
One idea that could be coming to the state soon, Blair says, is being developed by a company called Solar Roadways.“
Solar Roadways has a vision to actually create solar panels that we can drive on. Thereby creating the first-ever roadways that truly, through their creation of solar electricity, would pay for themselves.”
Blair says they’re also looking at adding intelligence to public right-of-way,which he says would add value to the self-driving cars that are being developed.
The convoy left St. Louis at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, then stopped at the Tesla Supercharger site in Columbia before continuing on to Kansas City.
The team will make its presentation at about 11 a.m. Wednesday. You can watch it on MoDOT’s website.
